Is California the best State to do my Adult Adoption case?

Is California a good place to do my Adult Adoption case? For several reasons, California is generally considered a good place to complete an adult adoption case. California adult adoption laws are generally more permissive than many other states' adult adoption laws. Additionally, due the large population of the State of California the courts that handle the adult adoption cases usually have a well-defined streamlined process to complete the adult adoption case.

California adult adoption laws are generally more permissive than other state's adult adoption laws for many reasons:

First, California is generally regarded as more permissive for adult adoption because there is no requirement that the Adopting Parent(s) AND the Adoptee actually live in the State of California. Only one of the parties, either the Adopting Parent(s) or the Adoptee but not both, need to live California. Many other states, but not California, require that both the Adopting Parent(s) AND the Adoptee reside in California.

Secondly, California is generally regarded as more permissive for adult adoption because it allows multi-parent adoptions where the Adoptee is allowed to have multiple persons listed as the Adoptee's lawful parents. California will even issue a new birth certificate (for those Adoptees who were born in California) listing multiple parents as the Adoptee's lawful parents, where as, many other states will not allow this.

Thirdly, California is generally regarded as more permissive for adult adoptions because there is no requirement that the Adopting Parent(s) and the Adult Adoptee have lived together in the past. This is particularly beneficial for adult adoption cases where the Adopting Parent(s) are adopting a family friend or a person of kindred spirit who has become the de facto "adult" child of the Adopting Parent(s), though the Adopting Parents and the Adult Adoptee never shared a residence together.

Fourthly, California is generally regarded as more permissive for adult adoptions because most California Courts (though not all California Courts) will allow the Adult Adoption hearing to take place by remote video hearing. This removes the need to travel to the courthouse from far away, or even from other States or other Countries, to participate in the final Adult Adoption hearing.

Lastly, California is generally regarded as more permissive for adult adoptions because California's large population has forced the larger counties to put streamlined processes in place to complete adult adoption cases in a timely manner.  For example, as of the year 2026, the largest county in California is Los Angeles County which handles nearly 3,000 adoption cases per year and completes the adult adoption cases (if they are filed correctly) in approximately 30 days from case filing to final hearing. Many other states may take 6 months to one year to complete an adult adoption case.
